Current schemes of treatment of patients with oral cavity and oropharynx malignancies are often restricted by patients’ condition and require adequate supportive therapy both in pretreatment period and during all phases of therapy. The success of treatment depends on the initial patients’ performance status, however, most of them are diagnosed with locally advanced disease accompanied by symptoms of nutritive insufficiency. In addition, we should not forget about the negative energy balance in this group of patients. Adequate nutritional support is a mandatory component of the complex therapy and should be recommended at all stages of patient’s management. Timely identification of patients at risk of nutritional disorders can prevent progressive weight loss and the development of refractory cachexia.
