The aim of the study was to improve diagnosis and treatment of patients with functional dysphonia by using ultrasound of the larynx.
Material and methods. Larynx ultrasonography was performed to healthy people without dysphonia (n=10) and patients with functional dysphonia/aphonia (n=20). Complex drug therapy and oropharyngeal muscle exercise therapy without ultrasound biofeedback (G1, n=10) or oropharyngeal muscle exercise therapy with ultrasound biofeedback (G2, n=10) were used.
Results. Larynx ultrasonography is a minimally invasive, easily reproducible, and inexpensive method of laryngeal examining which may become a perfect tool for a functional dysphonia identification with its later monitoring. The group of patients receiving complex medication therapy and oropharyngeal muscle exercise therapy with ultrasound biofeedback compared to the group of patients without ultrasound biological feedback had significantly higher functional results (p<0.005).
Conclusion. Larynx ultrasonography is a perfect tool for understanding the pathophysiology of functional dysphonia. Oropharyngeal muscle exercise therapy with ultrasound biofeedback is an effective treatment tool for functional dysphonia.
